  • Complexions Detroit Summer Intensive - Theatre and Dance ( June 16 - 29, 2018 )

    The Complexions Contemporary Ballet Intensive Program instructs its students like no other. It guides dancers to achieve their full artistic potential in the unique and exclusive style of Complexions Contemporary Ballet. Students are taught the Complexions Technique through classroom exercises and company repertoire instruction. Participants experience techniques designed to cultivate and develop strong, well-trained dancers who are educated to perform more skillfully and creatively. The dates are Saturday, June 16, 2018 to Friday, June 29, 2018

    Students attending Complexions Detroit Summer Intensive 2018 will:

    • Attend the Complexions Contemporary Ballet Company performance on June 16th, 2018 at the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts
    • Study with Complexions Artistic Directors and company members for two amazing weeks of a variety of techniques. Including “Nique” the unparalleled contemporary ballet technique specifically developed by Artistic Directors Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden
    • Perform Complexions repertory and technique at the Student Showcase with Complexions Company members on Friday, June 29th at 3:00 p.m. on the very same Detroit Music Hall stage!

  • Coding Boot Camp ( June 18 - 22, 2018 )

    Learning to code. Strengthen computer science skills through mini applications and hands-on exercises. Learn computer hardware and machine language and object-oriented programming concepts in programming. Provides a base of conceptual understanding and language-specific syntax and data handling.

    Wayne State University College of Engineering and Department of Computer Science are offering several camps designed to assist elementary, middle, and high school aged students in learning some of the skills needed to participate in the opportunities that are available by considering a career in engineering and computer science. 

    Ages 13– 17

    Days: Monday through Friday 

    Time: 8:30 am – 4:30 pm

    Duration: One-week sessions

    Cost: $300.00 per one-week session.

  • Technology Toys Camp ( June 18 - 22, 2018 )

    Learn how to use a tiny computer, make things spin, light up, and play music. Create musical sculptures, interactive jewelry, dancing creatures and playful inventions. Learn how to plug lights, motors, and sensors into devices, then program them to react, interact, and communicate. Students will use Scratch, a program, that allows you to program your own interactive stories, games, and animations. Scratch helps young people learn to think creatively, reason systematically, and work collaboratively.

    The Department of Music @ Wayne is excited to present a one-week Summer Piano Camp focused on improving students' music interpretation and technical skills while fostering an appreciation for collaboration and performance. Each student will build on their musical abilities through individual lessons, masterclasses, and various performance opportunities throughout the week. The camp runs from 10 am to 2 pm.

    The Department of Music @ Wayne is excited to present a one-week Summer Piano Camp focused on improving students' music interpretation and technical skills while fostering an appreciation for collaboration and performance.   • SAT Boot Camp ( June 25, 2018 - August 2, 2018 )

    The SAT Boot Camp is a six-week mentoring and intensive SAT test preparation program, focusing on math and writing skills necessary for success with SAT and college access. The program will run June 25th – August 2nd , Monday-Thursday, from 8:30am-12pm for current 9th , 10th and 11th graders (entering 10th , 11th and 12th grade in the fall of 2018).

    Every day attendance is mandatory. The program is on the campus of Wayne State University and has limited spots available. First priority for this free, valuable program will be given to the most qualified applicants who submit complete, timely applications.

  • Robotics ( July 2 - 6, 2018 )

    Work in pairs to solve challenges by building and programming new exciting robots using the LEGO® Mindstorms® Robotics Invention System. Learn EV-3 programming and can learn RobotC programming. Build and program several new and exciting robots. Compete robot in friendly challenges and games with fellow campers. Students will also work with Sphero® SPRK, the robotic ball with lights and a gyroscope. With the use of Sphero®’s Lightning Lab app, students will program their Sphero® SPRK to complete missions, make light and sound shows, obtain data from scientific activities, and play games. It’s a chance to discover how real-world robotics works through playful projects.

  • Minecraft Adventures ( July 2 - 6, 2018 )

    Minecraft is one of the most popular video games. Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. MinecraftEDU allows students to not only play but build levels, design and use problem solving skills. Many schools are using MinecraftEDU for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning. Students will be taught building basics through gameplay, building adventure maps, and resource packs. Advance minecrafters will learn Java programming language to create and participate in 3D design challenges.

    The WSU Math Corps is a tuition free combined academic enrichment and mentoring program that brings middle and high school students together, with college students and mathematicians to share in the teaching and learning of mathematics in a university setting. Based on the idea of creating a self-perpetuation corps, students matriculate through the program and return as mentors and tutors, passing their knowledge and values on to younger students, who in turn do the same. The Math Corps program strives to make a difference and change students' lives guided by a very simple but unwavering belief that all children have a unique and special greatness within them, and that through hard work and a commitment to excellence, and with the support of a caring community, this greatness can be realized.

    To be eligible for the Math Corps program student must currently be in the 6th -11th grades and either: 1) enrolled in a public school in the cities of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park, or 2) a resident of Detroit, Hamtramck, or Highland Park, also enrolled in a public school.

    The Planetarium at Wayne State University is excited to announce our eighth Astronomy Summer Camp, Camp Cosmos!

    Camp Cosmos is a two-week long astronomy and physics camp designed for students aged 12-15 (suggested grades 7-10). 

    Summer camp dates are weekdays from July 9-20th. Base camp for this summer program is located in the WSU Planetarium! 

    Students will investigate the night sky and learn about telescopes, as well as explore many of the most interesting aspects of space science such as the Solar System, the Milky Way Galaxy and our vast Universe. Topics include the Big Bang, stellar evolution, supernovas, neutron stars, black holes, galaxies, cosmology, and current mysteries like dark matter and dark energy.

    Students will also enjoy many hands-on activities and special experiences such as visits to the WSU Recreation and Fitness Center and to local area museums in the nearby Midtown Cultural Center.

    WSU Camp Cosmos is a cosmic experience!

    Camp hours: 9am-4pm (except for Friday, July 20th which is 9am-1pm)

    This initiative has evolved and redefines the summer jazz camp concept. With 40 high school students being chosen through competitive audition, and no students burdened with a tuition fee, the program brings together a highly diverse collection of talented youth from urban, rural, and suburban settings. The program has enjoyed 100% attendance every year, significant numbers of returning students, and a reputation for excellence throughout the Southeast Michigan area.   • Minecraft Adventures ( July 23 - 27, 2018 )

    Minecraft is one of the most popular video games. Minecraft enable players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D procedurally generated world. MinecraftEDU allows students to not only play but build levels, design and use problem solving skills. Many schools are using MinecraftEDU for science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) learning. Students will be taught building basics through gameplay, building adventure maps, and resource packs. Advance minecrafters will learn Java programming language to create and participate in 3D design challenges.

    Ages: 10 – 12
